Rain Rain Rain!!

     Rain Rain Rain!! And lots of it!!  This last week we were up in Lake George, and we were receiving tons of rain! On our drive down, through the Springs, fountain creek, wasn't exactly, a "creek" anymore, more like a raging river. I'll post those pictures soon.

Buckin' Bales

      Today was quite full! This morning, a friend of ours, who works at a place that sells hay, came over and asked if we could work today, and we happened to not have anything to do today. So we headed out to pick up a bunch of bales. The lady who had ordered them from another company, wasn't pleased with the hay quality, so we went and bought them off her hands. We had a big long goose neck trailer, and we slowly started to fill it up. We stacked them six high. 

      The lady was very talkative, and a very nice lady. We got about 250 bales in about 3-4 hours. We took turns throwing the bales up and stacking them, so as not wear one person out. And being allergic to hay, it wasn't the best day, so all the while, I was sneezing etc. 

       When we got back, we unloaded all the hay onto some pallets. Luckily we had more help, so it got done a lot faster than when we loaded it. Just as we were finishing stacking all the bales, it started to rain, heavy. So we quickly ran and got some tarps to cover it. The wind was blowing pretty hard, so that didn't help with the managing the tarps, but we got it done. By the time we got into the barn, out of the rain, we were soaked! When we got home, we changed into some nice, dry clothing.

Loose Steer

      Well this morning was exciting! Around 8 o'clock, we let our horse and our dexter steer out to graze, and while you'd think they would be excited about it, our dexter steer wasn't. I guess he was having separation anxiety, because he was mooing all morning, to our steers out on that big pasture which I wrote about in this post here. 

      Luckily, while my Dad was getting ready to leave for work, he saw him and noticed that he was on the wrong side of the fence, which happened to be our neighbors yard! So I went out there with a rope to catch him. Now normally, he is more than willing to let me put a rope on him, but not this time. So as I walked up, he started to walk away, so matched my pace to his, and then he started to run to the steers at the side of the fence, when he stopped at the fence, I caught up to him, and then he ran away again. So my Dad got on one end, and I on the other in the strip of easement land, and we slowly closed in; he kept looking for a way out, but we had him trapped. 

      I got the rope on him and started to lead him back. As it turned out, he had jumped over the fence, ripping it out of the wood post. Once we got to the road; so I could walk him to the gate, he burst off running. Now you might have heard me say, that he is a very sturdy and strong steer, so he just pulled me right along with him. Spraying me with cow squirts as well (Mmm fun!) ;)  He was evidently scared of something. Then he had the bright idea of running right into the fence, which stopped him immediately and flipped him over. He totally destroyed that part of the fence. 

      After we got him unstuck from the fence, we put him back in the main pasture. Now I must admit, I kind of enjoyed seeing him flip over :P I was saying to myself, "That oughta' teach you not to go running into fences again"

Runaway Steer

I know... I have been a horrible blogger! I haven't posted for about a week! That is quite a stretch for me, so I thought I would sit down and post today. The funniest thing happened to me the other day. Yesterday, we let our steers out on a friends pasture, and boy were they excited. We led them up to the pasture by lead rope instead of taking them in the trailer. When they saw the grass on the side of the road, they tried to pull us to the grass. When we wouldn't let go they pulled even harder, still to no avail. When we got them into the pasture, they wanted to run. As we were leading them to the stock tank, one of our steers (the one I was leading)  just, spontaneously burst out running, yanking me off my feet, and dragging me across the ground :P I kept holding on, as he drug me, about twenty yards, before he stopped! I must admit, it was actually kind of fun :P I haven't been drug like that, since I was learning how to rope, and got drug across the ground by a goat., We had a good laugh about it afterwards though. Anyway, here are some pictures for the day.

Picture of the Day

We got some more rain! We had a nice drizzle yesterday evening. We got only 0.05 inches, but it was still nice to have the rain. 

Yesterday morning, we leased a bull so that we can breed our cow. The moment he stepped out of the trailer when we unloaded him, he made this really deep moan/moo sound, and our calf just absolutely freaked out! He was running around all panicked. I had forgotten how small the bull was, compared to our dairy steers.

Cabelas and Picture of the Day

Well, Wednesday was busy, I went to Cabela's with my Dad, brother, and a bunch of friends, it was a lot of fun! A friend of ours had a membership, so we got in before it opened. 

There were people camping out front, waiting for it to open the next day. They even had a flat screen TV set up. 

They had these audio mountain lions, and bears and turkeys, that would go off, like every 20 minutes, it got really annoying. I spent a lot of time in the archery section.

Well, yesterday, we were supposed to go berry picking, but as it turned out, there was a typo on the website, so we got the date wrong. It was a lot of fun though. They had this cool contraption called a "Hail Cannon" which you fire off before, during and after the storm, and its supposed to prevent hail from forming. 

We have also been getting so much rain recently! It is such a blessing! Our pastures are looking great! Anyway, enough blabbing! Here is the picture for today.
